Meet Your Counselor
Welcome! Thanks for checking out my website. I have to be honest, I really don’t like writing these “therapist intros” because they always sound cheesy but, here is my best effort. I was born and raised on the Western Slope of Colorado and moved to Fort Collins in 2005 to pursue a degree in pre-veterinary sciences at Colorado State University (CSU). It was during my time as an undergraduate at CSU where I learned that I was not cut out to be a veterinarian. However, I did enjoy helping others and I decided to focus my energy on humans and keep animals as my favorite pastime. I graduated from CSU in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and worked in the Fort Collins community providing addiction counseling to adolescents in residential treatment for several years. It was at this point that I decided to pursue my Masters of Arts in Clinical Mental Health and School Counseling at the University of Northern Colorado. I completed my clinical internship at the CSU counseling center in 2015 and continued to work at the CSU Counseling Center in a variety of roles including on the post-hospitalization team, the behavioral health team, and the DAY (drugs, alcohol and you) programs. I decided to leave the CSUHN in spring 2023 to pursue a full-time private practice.
During my training at CSU I worked to develop several specializations including providing individual and group counseling services to members of the LGBTQ+ communities, supporting survivors of interpersonal violence, and working with folks experiencing substance use concerns. In addition to my individual therapy experience I have also lead groups focused on supporting individuals through the coming out/being out process as well as working directly with survivors of sexual assault. I have received specific training in Trauma Informed Care, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Interpersonal Process approaches.
After nearly a decade in the field, I have learned that my role as your therapist is primarily to support you, the individual, in identifying and strengthening your own resources in order to approach any obstacles you might be encounter. I use a person-centered approach and I appreciate the uniqueness of everyone who enters my office. I also value diversity and understand that identities, intersectionality, and privilege will impact how individuals interact and perceive the world and will show up in our counseling relationship. I am continuously working to recognize my areas of privilege and intersecting identities including being a white, cis-gendered, heterosexual fat* woman. It is my goal in our work to bring conversations about identity-related concerns into the space as they feel relevant to our work and to not shy away from “difficult” topics.
Overall, my goal is to support your growth by building an authentic and meaningful relationship and helping to identify and remove barriers to change by highlighting your own unique strengths. I look forward to learning more about you and your story.
*I use the term fat as an act of “fat acceptance”. Feel free to ask me about my work with body image and eating concerns
